Aloe vera is a plant which belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, native to North Africa. It requires plenty of sun and a hot, arid climate, like the one in the south of the Canary Islands, which is perfect for growing it.
The regenerating power of aloe vera
Aloe juice has been used for centuries for its extraordinary hydrating, regenerative, nourishing and healing properties. Over 5000 years ago, it was used by Egyptians for curative purposes.
However, we had to wait until 1935 to find the first scientific study relating to the curative power of Aloe vera, which was carried out by Doctors E. and C. Collins.
In 1959, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recognised that products containing Aloe vera help with skin regeneration. This was the major discovery which launched products made with Aloe vera.
As a result, since the 70s, the Aloe vera industry has not stopped growing.
Aloe vera is a natural product often used in the cosmetics field
Although there are many indications for its use, controlled trials are necessary to determine its true efficacy. The aloe vera plant, its properties, mechanism of action and clinical uses are briefly examined in this article.
What is its importance in the pharmaceutical and food industry?
We analyse its structure, chemical composition, processing and biological activity.

Our main raw material is Aloe vera grown in the Canaries. The Canarian climate ensures that the plant grows in an optimal environment and that it naturally contains a high quantity of active ingredients and minerals.
The aloe vera used by Atlantia has the "Organic farming" designation awarded by CRAE (Organic agriculture regulatory board)
This 100% organic Aloe vera is not genetically modified and no synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or fungicides have been used to grow it.
The leaves are harvested when the plant is 4 or 5 years old
The main reason for doing this is because it has reached the optimal size so that the plant contains the adequate quantities of all its substances.
When the plant is 4 or 5 years old, the time that is reaches the optimal size so that it contains the adequate quantities of all its substances, we harvest very carefully by hand.
We take the recently cut fresh leaves directly to the laboratory to extract their juice.
The green-coloured external layer which covers the leaf is peeled and the substance which appears between the skin and the gel, a substance rich in resins and anthraquinones – aloin and aloe-emodin – which have a highly laxative effect, is discarded.
Once the aloe leaf is peeled, the next step involves the extraction, where a white-toned gelatinous mass is obtained.
It is subsequently filtered to remove impurities and unwanted elements. Filtering turns the gelatinous mass into a liquid, or Aloe vera juice.
We store the juice in refrigerated stainless steel tanks to guarantee
that all of its properties are preserved for as long as possible.
Once the juice is cold stabilised, we combine it with other active ingredients and excipients
to boost the benefits of the Aloe vera, to improve its efficacy, and to offer the
purest, most pleasant and effective line of care, health and beauty products on the market.
A large number of the products that we find on the market use aloe concentrates or dehydrated powder (reconstituted lyophilised Aloe). Our products are prepared directly with pure aloe pulp and our manufacturing processes ensure that the aloe maintains its biological characteristics.
